Random thoughts

Going back to the first lecture when Adam told us about some theory that a guy named Marshall McLuhan proposed, that technologies are extensions of the human body. After doing a week of this course, I can begin to understand where he was coming from. To some extent, the clothes we wear, the car we drive, the people we hang out with, all reflect who we are in a way. Likewise, the type of mobile phone we carry or computer that we use, says something about our knowledge of technology and how much we value it, which in turn is somewhat an extension of ourselves. For example, someone who does not know a thing about technology, may purchase a mobile phone purely for the purpose of making and receiving calls. Whereas, someone else who values technology may purchase a mobile phone with other 'exciting' features, such as, emailing capabilities, bluetooth, camera, picture messaging, video calling (my current obsession) etc.

Similarly, when people post entries on their blogs, not only are they expressing their thoughts and feelings on a public arena (unless they make it private), in a way, their personalities also come through in the way they write, the language that they use, the pictures they choose to put up etc. You may not know someone in person, but it is possible to get a sense of who they are just by reading their blogs.
